Chicago Med has no shortage of great actors, and it looks like the episode “Change Is a Tough Pill to Swallow” is going to add yet another: Sarah Rafferty. The beloved TV star will appear in a crucial role opposite the rest of the ED staff, no doubt causing controversy for her character’s decision to operate on her own daughter.

Rafferty’s involvement with the show, and her character’s surgeon profession, has some fans wondering if the star is going to be a recurring face, or perhaps even a new addition to the cast.

If true, Rafferty would be an enormous boost to the team. But is it true? Read on to find out whether the former Suits star will don scrubs and become a Chicago Med regular.

Sarah Rafferty on Chicago Med

Rafferty is not going to be joining the cast of Chicago Med. The actress will be the focal point of the aforementioned season 7 episode, but neither the showrunners nor the cast have announced plans to make her a full-time ED member.

Given the brief glimpses we get of Rafferty’s character, she isn’t someone who would gel with the ironclad procedures of the ED. She looks to be an accomplished surgeon who elbows Crockett (Dominic Rains) out of the way so that she can perform an emergency operation on her daughter.

This is a legal and professional violation for surgeons. Under no circumstances is a surgeon given permission to operate on a family member, so it’ll be interesting to see what becomes of Rafferty’s character and whether she eventually gives the reins over to Crockett so that her daughter can be operated on legally.

Rafferty has stayed quite busy since leaving her starmaking role on Suits in 2019. She’s appeared in hit shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Bones, as well as the television film All Things Valentine. She’s also dipped into the medical world before, as evidenced by her recurring role on the last season of Grey’s Anatomy.

The actress may not become a central cast member of Chicago Med, but we’re still looking forward to the intensity and charisma she brings to her role. Brief though it may be, it’ll definitely add dramatic weight to “Change Is a Tough Pill to Swallow.”
