What happened to Hailey on Chicago PD?

Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) has undergone quite the character arc on Chicago PD. From being the upright and hopeful newcomer to the team, to covering up a murder alongside Voight (Jason Beghe), there’s never been a dull moment.

In the absence of dullness, however, there’s plenty of stress. Upton has been reeling since the season 8 finale, and her secret came to a head in the latest episode of Chicago PD. It looks as though she’s going to have to confront her actions, as well as the repercussions of them before the FBI links her to the crime.

So what’s going on with Upton? What can fans expect to see from her now that her secret is out of the bag? Let’s connect some dots and find out.

What happened to Upton on Chicago PD?

Upton’s guilt has driven her to insomnia, which has increasingly compromised her ability to do her job. This inability comes to head in the episode “In the Dark”, where Upton leaves a suspect alone to commit suicide in an interrogation room. She panics, unsure as to whether she forgot to frisk him, but Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) reminds her that frisking for weapons is something that gets done when a suspect is booked.

The concern on Voight’s face in this scene is two-fold. For one, he’s concerned about Upton’s state of mind with regards to her police work. For another, her increasingly fragile state might lead her to spill the details of what happened to Roy in the season 8 finale.

The climax of “In the Dark” takes place without Upton’s involvement, ironically. Voight spills the details to Halstead, who proceeds to blame him for what’s happened to Upton. The two part ways in a rush, and Halstead returns him to an exhausted Upton. They share an intense gaze, but nothing is said.

So what happened to Upton? Well, her secret was revealed to the one person she wanted to hide it from the most, and she’s going to have to contend with not only the guilt of her crime, but her decision to lie. It’s going to be a bumpy road for the couple, which actress Tracy Spiridakos teased during an interview with Hollywood Life.

The actress told the outlet that Upton and Halstead’s relationship will “absolutely” be impacted by the discovery of this secret. “That dynamic is affected for sure,” she added. The chances are slim that Upton gets fired, but there is a possibility that she be relieved from duty or put on leave due to her exhaustion and compromised mental state.

Only time will tell whether the character will be able to overcome her greatest setback yet.
