Chicago Fire had a big hurdle to overcome with the episode “Dead Zone”. The departure of Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) was a big blow to the show, but thankfully the ensemble was able to pull together and knock out a poignant follow-up to the monumental 200th episode.

The fallout of Casey’s absence was still felt by Brett (Kara Killmer), but the rest of the 51 team were too caught up with crises to dwell on it. There was a lot going on for all the characters in “Dead Zone”, most of all Severide (Taylor Kinney), who took the lead on the church fire case from last week.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago Fire!

What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (October 27th)

Brett is still adjusting to life without Casey, and the only thing that knocks her out of her malaise is the fact that dispatch calls are being sent out with notable mistakes. Eventually, it’s discovered that hackers have taken over the 911 dispatch and that the whole system is down.

This forces Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Herrmann (David Eigenberg) to take lead and show the younger firefighters how to field calls the old school way. This, of course, leads to some close calls and tense situations, especially as Gallo (Alberto Rosende) and Ritter (Daniel Kyri) struggle to make due with analogue materials.

Severide, meanwhile, is in the field with Lieutenant Wendy Seager (Andy Allo). The duo are looking into the church fire that occurred during the 200th episode, as the cause of the fire seems to have been a dead cat. They follow an assortment of leads, from a former Catholic school student to the priest who was present during the fire, but they come to discover that it’s a mysterious third party.

Severide nearly catches the suspect in the final act of the episode, but is forced to let him go when he discovers the aforementioned priest has been set on fire. He manages to put out the flames, but the case is ongoing.

The multi-episode arc of the church arsonist failed to reach a resolution, but fans were treated to an unexpected vocal cameo from Casey at the end of the episode. Brett tries to contact Casey after the hectic day at 51 and fails to get through to him. She does get a voicemail, though, and he laments their inability to be on the same work schedule. Casey suggests they set up a specific time to call, and Brett sits on the floor, quietly listening.

“Dead Zone” didn’t offer too much in the way of answers or major developments, but it did do a good job of setting the table for episodes down the line. We look forward to seeing what happens next.
