Brian Kelton (John C. McGinley) was a character that Chicago PD fans loved to hate. The Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department was corrupt as any character in the show’s history, and his willingness to bend the rules resulted in him becoming a mayoral candidate in season 6.

Kelton seemed destined to become the mayor of the city, but his journey to political success was cut short in shocking fashion. Chicago PD newcomers may not remember what happened to the character, however. Did he die? Who killed him?

We have all your answers regarding Brian Kelton and his untimely exit from Chicago PD.

How did Brian Kelton die on Chicago PD?

Brian Kelton was shot and killed in the season 6 finale, titled “Reckoning.” The character had just won the mayoral election, and one of his promises upon winning was that he would break up the Intelligence department. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) was shown driving to Kelton’s home after vowing to “take care” of him, and the episode ends with Kelton’s murder.

The cliffhanger ending strongly implied that Voight was the person responsible for Kelton’s death, which would have radically altered the course of the character and show. Fortunately, the season 7 episode “Doubt” gave us crucial details regarding Kelton’s final moments.

It turns out that Kate Brennan (Anne Heche) was the one who pulled the trigger. She was arrested for the murder, and when asked about her motives, she said that Kelton was going to ruin the city and she couldn’t let that happen. She attempted suicide shortly before her capture, but Voight and the rest of the CPD team were able to make the arrest without anyone meeting harm.

Brennan worked as the Deputy Superintendent in seasons 6 and 7. Her alliances were often unclear, and she bumped heads with Voight as often as she begrudgingly agreed with him. There’s been little mention of Kelton or Brennan since season 7, which makes sense given the traumatic series of events that led to both of their exits.
