Sophia Bush’s new show to become direct competition to Chicago PD

GOOD SAM stars Sophia Bush as Dr. Sam Griffith, a gifted heart surgeon who excels in her new leadership role as Chief of Surgery after her renowned boss falls into a coma. When her former boss wakes up months later demanding to resume his duties, Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent. Complicating matters is that the caustic and arrogant Dr. Rob "Griff" Griffith also happens to be her father. GOOD SAM premieres during the 2021-2022 broadcast season on the CBS Television Network. Sophia Bush will finally make her way back to primetime in 2022 but her return to primetime won’t be coming via a return to Chicago PD. Instead, it will be on a competitor network and as direct competition with her former series.

As previously reported, Bush is heading to CBS as the lead of the network’s new medical drama Good Sam which was ordered to series this summer and later announced to be part of CBS’s midseason schedule. The series marks Bush’s first starring role since the actress departed Chicago PD at the conclusion of the show’s fourth season back in 2017.

While Chicago PD fans are sure to be excited to finally welcome Bush back into their living rooms once a week via her new series, we have a feeling they won’t be thrilled with CBS’s scheduling plan.

When does Good Sam starring Sophia Bush premiere?

In looking ahead to the start of the new year, CBS has announced Good Sam will premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 10/9c. That’s right, CBS has officially made Sophia Bush‘s new series Chicago PD‘s new competitor!

Although we understand why CBS would look to shift Good Sam into its Wednesday night programming block, we’re not exactly thrilled with the fact that Good Sam will compete directly with Chicago PD.

Sure it’s never been easier to watch shows what with DVRs and the many streaming services out there, but Wednesdays are already stacked for One Chicago fans with the three series airing across NBC’s Wednesday night block.

While we can support Good Sam via DVR playback or streaming after its broadcast, with the show airing opposite Chicago PD it’s unlikely to get a ratings bump from PD fans who would surely support the series if it aired on any other night of the week. Instead, CBS is looking to pit Bush against her former show and we fear that could prove to be the wrong move for CBS.
