What happened to Mouse on Chicago PD?
Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) has a complicated past. His time spent with the 75th Ranger Regiment repeatedly comes up during cases in Chicago PD, each time offering a bit more insight into the character and his behavior. One of the most notable ties to the past, however, is his bond with fellow Ranger Greg “Mouse” Gerwitz.
Halstead and Mouse have collaborated on a handful of cases during the show’s history, with the former even helping him get an intelligence tech job. Given the significant role that Mouse plays in Halstead’s life, it may be surprising to hear that the character has been MIA since season 4.
What happened to Mouse? Is he set to return? Here’s a rundown of the character’s backstory and his future on Chicago PD.
Did Mouse die on Chicago PD?
Mouse (Samuel Hunt) was first introduced as a CI, or informant, during season 1. He became a bigger presence on the show starting in season 3, when his tech job allowed him to interact more freely with Halstead and the rest of IU. He proved an invaluable source for the team, but things began to splinter when he told Halstead that he was considering rejoining the Rangers.
Halstead reacted negatively to the news and reminded Mouse of the psychological toll that serving took on both of them. The warnings did nothing to stave off Mouse’s desire, however, and in the season 4 episode “A War Zone” he announced that he accepted an offer from his old unit. Halstead attacked Mouse in response, and had to be separated by Lindsay (Sophia Bush) as result.
Mouse quit his tech job and rejoined the unit, which is where he currently serves. There’s been no mention of the character since he left, implying that Halstead still has animosity about the way things ended between them.

Hunt hasn’t appeared in the One Chicago universe since 2016, but the actor has managed to stay busy elsewhere on TV. He made guest appearances on Empire and NCIS: New Orleans, and he had a pivotal role as Adam on the latest season of American Horror Story, Double Feature.
While showrunners like the keep the door open for characters to return, we don’t anticipate seeing Hunt’s character anytime soon. There’s a sense of finality with his arc, and given the full plate that Halstead is currently dealing with, we’d say fixing up a broken friendship would be somewhat low on his list. At least, for the time being.
