Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has been on a mission to rise up the firefighter ranks since season 9. She’s worked hard to get to where she is today, and she has a great relationship with the rest of the 51 squad.

That being said, her quest to become the new lieutenant of the 51 has hit a roadblock. Her choice to go out on the road and promote her Girls on Fire program was a worthwhile one, but it’s led to her pushing off her responsibilities at the firehouse.

This aloofness came to a head in the episode “Winterfest”. Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) said he was considering applicants for the lieutenant job, but he made it clear that Kidd would be taken out of the running if she didn’t make contact with him.

Is Stella Kidd leaving Chicago Fire for good?

Boden ultimately decided to give the job to Jason Pelham (Brett Dalton), who had been filling in as an interim lieutenant. He justified his decision by pointing out Pelham’s leadership skills, his ability to fit in with the rest of the 51 squad, and various instances of him putting the safety of civilians before his own.

Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas recently discussed Kidd and what her return at the end of the episode means during an interview with TV Insider.

“Sometimes when you get away from the situation you’re in and you’re on that hamster wheel and you take a breath and you’re doing something really worthwhile, it makes you question, what was I doing back there?”, Haas stated. “So she’s done some life evaluating and that’ll come out in the 10th episode.”

“Complicated” seems to be the opportune word for Kidd. In addition to her shaky professional ground, she will have to contend with Severide (Taylor Kinney) and her crumbling relationship. There’s been a lack of communication on her end, and given Severide’s growing friendship with Pelham, there may be some animosity towards the veteran firefighter and which side he’s on.

That said, things aren’t going to be smooth sailing for Pelham either. He may have the lieutenant position locked up, but that doesn’t mean the 51’s loyalty to Kidd couldn’t cause problems. Haas told TV Insider that Pelham will have to adjust to life with Kidd in the firehouse.

“You can hear about how much she means to people there, but it’s different when you see it, so he’s going to be faced with seeing it for the first time” he teased. “And at this point, he doesn’t even know that Severide and Kidd are an item, so that’s going to be discovered as this goes forward.”

The dynamic between Pelham and Kidd will be undeniably tense, but our hope is that the pair learn to work through their differences and get along, as they both bring strong skillsets to the table.
