Jason Pelham (Brett Dalton) is in a fragile position. While the firefighter proved himself to be a real asset to the 51, the return of Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) looks as though its going to cause some complications.

The biggest question fans will have once Chicago Fire resumes its tenth season is whether Kidd’s return will cause Pelham to be axed from the show. The former is a mainstay and the latter is still a newcomer who’s yet to establish himself among the firefighting ensemble.

Here’s what we know about Pelham and his future with the show.

Is Pelham leaving Chicago Fire?

Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas put worries at ease during a recent interview with TV Guide. He assured fans that Pelham would be sticking around for a bit, and that Kidd’s return doesn’t automatically mean the end of the character.

"“Pelham is going to be sticking around for a minute”, Haas announced. “You saw Boden offer him the lieutenant spot in this episode, which puts him rightfully in the firehouse family now. This is a guy who bounced around through no fault of his own.”"

Furthermore, Haas pointed out that Pelham has been seeking out a lieutenant position for years, and that Kidd coming back into the fold is not going to be enough to force him out or compromise his relationship with Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker).

“Getting to work with Boden would be any firefighter’s dream”, the showrunner added. “So he’s not ready to just skip on out of there because Kidd decided to return.”

All signs point to there being a divide among the 51 team. Some may side with Kidd and her desire to become the new lieutenant, given her seniority and her familiarity with the firehouse, but others may go with Pelham, who’s displayed a selflessness and a passion that Kidd is lacking.

While the outcome of this potential rivalry remains unknown, it’s a safe bet to assume that Pelham lasts throughout the rest of season 10. He will bolster any potential narratives regarding the 51 and he will, at the very least, serve as a wake up call for Kidd to get her act together and rise to the challenge of being the best person for the job.
