Chicago Fire spoilers: What happened in season 10 episode 17?
Chicago Fire left some dangling plot threads last episode. The biggest thread was the fate of Chief Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), who got caught kissing Violet (Hanako Greensmith) on the job and was faced with being fired.
The latest episode, titled “Keep You Safe”, provided resolution to this subplot as well as the one involving Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) and the adoption of a little boy into his family. In this sense, the title of the episode doubles as a personal as well as professional mission statement.
Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago Fire!
What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (April 6th)
The episode kicks off with Cruz and Chloe (Kristen Gutoskie) adjusting to life with Javier, the aforementioned little boy. They love having him around, but they also know it’s important to reunite him with biological family, so they’re trying desperately not to get too attached to him. Once Cruz arrives on the job, the firehouse gets a call for a car that is somehow split in two.
The survivors of the accident were badly injured, but it turns out that one of them didn’t want to deal with the police, and he runs off before the 51 get a chance to clear him. There’s also the fact that Violet is working with a newcomer, Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver), following her incident with Hawkins last episode. Jacobs proves herself to be a no-nonsense medic, as she is blunt and direct with the various people she treats.
Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) takes an interest in the survivor who ran, so she and Severide (Taylor Kinney) decide to look into the scene of the accident and piece together what’s going on. Severide works these kinds of cases with Seager (Andy Allo) normally, so it’s a nice change of pace to see him collecting clues alongside his fiance.
Hawkins, meanwhile, is in the clear. He’s not going to be fired for what happened with Violet, and the relief gives way to rage as the latter thinks Gallo (Alberto Rosende) is the one who snitched. She goes as far as to confront Gallo over what happened, but the firefighter assures her that he would never do anything to hurt her and that he actually tried to warn her of the impending incident because another employee told on Hawkins. Friendship restored.

We loop back around to Cruz, who’s told that it’s been difficult to find Javier’s relatives. Both him and Chloe agree that they would have no problem taking him in permanently, and making him an official part of the Cruz family. It’s a lovely wrap up to a story and a new character that’s sure to charm fans for seasons to come.
Kidd and Severide eventually solve the case, and the episode ends on a subdued, if slightly hopeful note. The couple discuss the cruel things that people are capable of, but they have each other, and they cuddle before the fade to black. It’s scenes like these that have fans theorizing about a wedding in the near future.
There were no shocking developments this week, but it does feel like the stage is being set for big storylines involving the various 51 characters. We’re hoping to see Casey (Jesse Spencer) make a return come the finale, and we’re doubly hoping that Brett (Kara Killmer) will be with him!
