Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is a woman on a mission. The last few episodes of Chicago PD have seen her dive into her work with a reckless abandon and a passion that we’ve never seen before, and it makes sense why.

The purp she’s pursuing, Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White), is the lowest of the low, and he’s got a form of protection in his police chief dad (Michael Gaston). Upton is going to do whatever it takes to get Sean behind bars, but will her uncompromising nature compromise her career? Could we be seeing the end of Upton as a police officer?

Is Tracy Spiridakos leaving Chicago PD?

The PD writers have done something very clever in season 10, which is position the way Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) handled cutting corners and the way that Upton has handled it. The former was overtaken by the moral ambiguity of the job, and part of his decision for quitting was because he’d lost his sense of right and wrong.

Granted, a lot of the ambiguity came by way of Voight (Jason Beghe), who’s cut more than his fair share of corners in the past, but Upton has seemingly taken different lessons. She has decided to do whatever is necessary to bring Sean in, and that includes doing things in a manner that isn’t completely by the book.

It’s reached such a fever pitch that Voight has had to be the one to step in and tell her to take a step back, and try to convict Sean through more traditional means. The seeds for this husband and wife split were planted last season, when the two of them responded very differently to covering up Upton’s accidental killing of Roy Walton.

If Upton decides to do things by the book, and Sean walks, she will have to reconsider her future with the IU. Similarly, if she does things her own way, and she gets justice more conclusively, she will have to decide whether what she did was “right.” We’re potentially heading for the same dilemma that Halstead faced (with a few key differences, of course).

So will Upton walk? We doubt it. Sure, she’s going to come out of the Sean case a different person, but her commitment to the job has seemingly strengthened after Halstead’s exit, so we think she will do whatever hard personal work is necessary to be of service to the Windy City. Let’s hope so, at least.
