It’s been months since Jesse Lee Soffer last shared an update from the Chicago PD set, but that has officially changed! Soffer has returned to Instagram in order to offer fans a look at his return to the hit NBC drama in a series of new photos.

In the new Instagram post, Soffer rejoins his costars on set in a trio of photos that are sure to get fans talking! “Back at it, just different,” Soffer wrote as if to assure fans that his return is not going to be in front of the camera but rather as director.

The first photo reunites Soffer with his frequent scene partner and on-screen love interest Tracy Spiridakos (Hailey Upton), who is all smiles as she takes a break between takes. The second photo in the group offers a look at Soffer in action as a director, providing feedback to former costars Jason Beghe (Hank Voight) and LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin Atwater).

Finally, we get the chance to see Soffer back in the Intelligence Unit’s headquarters where he seems to be reviewing the script for the episode alongside Beghe and Hawkins in addition to fellow cast members Marina Squerciati (Kim Burgess), Patrick John Flueger (Adam Ruzek), Benjamin Levy Aguilar (Dante Torres), and Amy Morton (Trudy Platt).

Is Jesse Lee Soffer coming back to Chicago PD?

Jesse Lee Soffer is coming back to Chicago PD, just not in the way fans might be hoping. While we’d love to see Soffer stepping back in front of the camera to reprise his role as Detective Jay Halstead, Soffer’s return to the show will be unfolding behind-the-scenes instead.

As previously reported, Soffer is returning to direct the sixteenth episode of the show’s current tenth season which is why he’s been back on set. It’s also why Soffer was careful in selecting the words he used to tease his official return when posting about it on social media.

Soffer is indeed back at it and working alongside his former costars. This time, things are just different because Soffer is working behind the scenes rather than alongside his former costars when filming new episodes.

There is a chance Soffer could always return as Halstead as well as the One Chicago shows have been good at finding ways to bring actors back into the fold following their original departures. Given how amicably Soffer left and that he’s already returned to the show to direct, the odds of him returning to the series, even if just for a brief cameo, do seem good.
