Chicago Fire is a hub of colorful personalities, but sometimes, said personalities need a change of scenery. There have been lots of character exits under tragic circumstances, but there have also been ones that are a little more grounded and mundane.

We’ve seen lots of instances of characters realizing that there are unsatisfied, or are looking to start another chapter of their lives, and decide to hightail it out of the Windy City for something new. In fact, there’s a contingency of fans who think Brett (Kara Killmer) is going to do just that in the season 11 finale.

Whether or not she does, we decided to highlight three instances of Chicago Fire characters deciding to leave the city to find work elsewhere.

Why did Gabby Dawson leave Chicago Fire?

Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) went through a great many tragedies during her time on the show, including the disolution of her romance with Casey (Jesse Spencer) and death of her good friend Shay (Lauren German). The character eventually decided that she wanted to do good in a different part of the world, so she relocated to her native Puerto Rico during the season 6 finale.

Dawson wanted to aid Puerto Rican denizens in hurricane relief, and she thought that the change of scenery would do her some good. The character reappeared in a season 7 episode, much to all of our delight, but she’s been pretty quiet since. It seems like the move was what she needed.

Why did Peter Mills leave Chicago Fire?

Peter Mills (Charlie Barnett) was a crucial member of Chicago Fire during the show’s first couple seasons, but he was forced to reconsider his life plan when he discovered that his mom and sister were moving to North Carolina to start a new restaurant and wanted him to come with them.

This came as a shock to him, and he initially balked at the idea of uprooting his life. The more he thought about it, though, the more he came to realize that he valued his family more than his job at the 51, and he relented. He moved out of Chicago and we never heard from him again. We hope he’s doing well.

Why did Matt Casey leave Chicago Fire?

Casey was perfectly content living in Chicago, especially given his circle of friends and his romance with Brett (Kara Killmer). Then, seemingly out of nowhere, came the Darden boys. The sons of his late friend were stuck without a legal guardian, so the firefighter took it upon himself to move to Portland, Oregon so that they could finish high school and maintain a sense of normalcy.

It was a selfless act, and one that greatly uprooted Casey’s personal life. He now works for the Bureau of Fire in Portland, which allows him to return to Chicago every once in a while to check in on his old pals (and his ex-girlfriend). The pertinence of this one very high, given the decision that Brett will have to make, and the fact that Casey will play a big part in the season 11 finale.
