Fire Country has something to prove. The first season was a runaway success, but the Hollywood strikes, coupled with the production delay for the second season, has fans wondering if the show can avoid a sophomore slump. If the previous writers strike proved anything, it’s that shows that are forced to make changes due to eternal factors can sometimes ruins momentum.

Fortunately, the creative team on Fire Country is keenly aware of this fact. The writers room for the show has recently opened back up, which means episodes for the second seasons are finally coming together. Joan Ratner, one of the show’s executive producers, admitting to feeling a little nervous when it came time to continue the story.

How many episodes will be in Fire Country season 2?

“I think that we’re all a little bit like, can we still do this”, Ratner told Deadline. Fortunately, the nerves went away and the creative ideas have quickly started to flow. “We’ve all read books, had life experiences”, the executive producer added. Tia Napolitano was similarly encouraged by how quickly the workflow picked back up. “I feel energized”, the showrunner shared. “We feel like we’re ready to come back even stronger.”

Since the quality looks to be taken care of, the curiosity shifts to quality. The first season of Fire Country had 22 episodes, which is a standard amount for a primetime procedural drama. It was thought that season 2 would allow Ratner, Napolitano and company to producer another 22, but the strike and subsequent delay has complicated matters.

Napolitano told the outlet that she’s unclear on how long the second season will be, since CBS has yet to provide with an update or an official episode order. The solution? Write as though there will be a full season, and make adjustments after the fact.

“The more hands the better, especially with 22 [episodes]”, the showrunner added. “We have the ability to split into two rooms. While most of the room works on season, a few of us can peel off and go talk about the premiere. With one writer up on set in Vancouver and someone else off on episode, this group gets smaller as everyone’s peeling off to keep the ball moving.”

This working process will allow Fire Country to be ready for a 12 episode or a 22 episode season, and maintain Napolitano’s promise to “shock” the fans. “We’re ready to come back even stronger and shock everybody from the second the episodes start to air when we’re finally out there”, she revealed. We’re ready for it.
