Chicago Fire has deep benches when it comes to characters. There are a dozen or so firefighters that the show can focus on at any given time, and each of them are just as exciting and interesting as the next. That’s no small feat, but it does create an issue in which some characters are given less to do.

Chicago Fire will return with season 12 in 2024, and while the exact episode count is still being worked out, the fact that it will probably be a shorter season means we will get even less time with our favorite characters. Since the scripts for new episodes are currently being written, we decided to highlight three characters we think should get more screen time. Let us know which characters you want to see more of in the comments!

Will Sam Carver return for Chicago Fire season 12?

Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) was a bit of a wild card in season 11. He came in hot, feuding with Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and earning a suspension “attacking” a civilian, which made it tough to tell if he’d make it past the middle of the season. He managed to do just that, however, and has gone on to become one of the proactive and consistently interesting characters in the entire firehouse.

Carver has cooled off, thankfully, but there’s still plenty to be explored regarding his past and his relationships (romantic or otherwise) with the rest of the 51 team. With some of the show’s top male characters eyeing an exit, Carver’s presence is more crucial than ever, and we think it’d be a huge mistake to not capitalize on it.

Will Kelly Severide return for Chicago Fire season 12?

Yes, we are hoping that one of the show’s main characters has more screen time in season 12. Severide (Taylor Kinney) left with roughly a third of season 11 left to go, and while we thought he would be back in time for the finale, the episode came and went without his presence. The only thing we heard about him is that he’d been traveling the country helping with various arson cases.

It’s impossible to speak on Taylor Kinney’s personal situation, and why he decided to take a leave of absence from the show, but we do know that his performance is a huge part of what makes the show so appealing. It would be a significant blow to Chicago Fire if Severide never showed back up, so this is our attempt to manifest screen time (and lots of it) ahead of the season 12 premiere.

Will Wendy Seager return for Chicago Fire season 12?

Wendy Seager (Andy Allo) surprised us all in season 11. Seager had previously served as a foil for Severide whenever he decided to put his arson investigation skills to the test, but the latter’s absence meant that she finally got a chance to establish herself with the rest of the 51 team.

She became friendly with Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Kidd, and struck up a brief romance with Carver. We got to see a whole new side of her, and given the positive feedback that the character has gotten as a result, we hope to see even more of her in season 12. She provides an outsider perspective while still being familiar to fans, which is a tricky balancing act that the writers should take advantage of.
