4 things nobody wants to admit about Blue Bloods

Blue Bloods has managed to keep fans interested for 13 years. That’s no small feat– most shows either lose steam or get cancelled before they reach a decade, but the police drama has shown no signs of dipping in terms of popularity. We love Blue Bloods, and are very excited for its return in 2024, but we do, admittedly, have some picky nits with the show in its current iteration.

From uninteresting subplots to personality changes that sap beloved characters of some of their appeal, these are the things Blue Bloods fans may not be happy to read about. Some may disagree but we are pointing them out in the hopes that they are remedied in the upcoming season. Let us know what you would like to see change in the comments!

Jamie Reagan hasn’t had much to do in recent seasons

Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) has always had the least to do as the youngest member of the Reagan family, but the last few seasons have really pushed it to the limit. The character’s screen time has become increasingly inconsequential to the main plots of each episode, which is magnified when he’s in the company of Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Erin (Bridget Moynahan).

We’re not saying that Jamie should be the main focus of the show, but earlier seasons did a much better job of balancing the character’s personal life and subplots with the cases that tie the rest of an episode together. Let’s hope the writers give Jamie a bit more to do in 2024.

Eddie Janko has suffered as a character since marrying Jamie

Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray) was a fan favorite on Blue Bloods, especially during season 4-8. She was a terrific foil to Jamie, and their romance was arguably the most fleshed-out and fully realized of the entire show. It was only natural that Eddie and Jamie would eventually get married, and we wouldn’t have it any other way, frankly, but it feels like marriage has sapped Eddie of her baseline appeal.

In previous seasons, Eddie established herself as a capable police officer who could handled any situation that came her way. In recent years, the character has seemingly come to rely on Jamie, and turn to him when things get dangerous and/or complicated. We don’t want a split or anything, but we would very much want to see Eddie reclaim some of her individuality.

The teased reunion between Jack Boyle and Erin Reagan is getting old

Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann) is nobody’s favorite character on Blue Bloods. He rubs the Reagan family the wrong way, and depending on the episode, he can be quite annoying. We understand his role in Erin’s life, being the father of her child and all, but the show seems to be teasing the notion of a rekindled romance between the characters.

To put it bluntly, no thanks. Jack and Erin’s dynamic is more interesting as a ex-couple than a couple, and based on the interactions we’ve seen between them over the years, they’re better suited as co-parents. It would be more compelling for the show if Erin sparked a romance with someone new, especially since the character decided not to run for D.A. in season 13.

There hasn’t been enough screen time for Joseph Hill

Joseph Hill (Will Hochman) was a welcome addition to the Reagan family in Blue Bloods season 10, especially when it was revealed that he was the son of the late Joe Reagan. He’s followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the NYPD, which has made for an interesting dynamic between Joseph and the older, more experienced members of his family, but his screen time has also lessened with each new season.

Hill had 5 appearances in season 11, then only 4 appearances in season 12, then down even more to 2 appearances in season 13. He’s a character who could really bolster the supporting cast down the line, especially if the show stays on the air for several more years. As such, we think it’d be a good idea to incorporate him into more stories. Give Hill some shine!
