Chicago Fire is about to lose yet another original member of its cast, and this cast exit is one that is certainly going to hit close to home for longtime viewers.
In an unfortunate and unexpected development, Joe Minoso will be exiting the series early in season 15. Minoso originated the role of Joe Cruz in the series premiere episode and has been a mainstay on the series throughout the years. While he started as a recurring player in season 1, he appeared in nearly every episode of the show’s first season before being promoted to an official series regular in season 2.
Minoso's exit is one that is sure to shake the One Chicago fandom, as Minoso was one of only four remaining original cast members set to return for season 15. With Minoso exiting the show, that leaves just Taylor Kinney, David Eigenberg, and Christian Stolte as the remaining original Chicago Fire cast. Of that group, only Kinney's future on the show is confirmed after he and fellow star Miranda Rae Mayo inked new deals to return for season 15 ahead of the season 14 finale in May.
Cruz was one of several characters whose lives were on the line as season 14 drew to a close as a result of the season-ending cliffhanger. Cruz was among the firefighters trapped inside the building during the fire as the roof collapsed and Mayday calls came through over the radios. Fans have been worried about his character's fate, and news of Minoso's departure is sure to raise the levels of concern.
Joe Minoso is exiting Chicago Fire but it sounds like Cruz will not be killed off
Although we'll have to wait until Chicago Fire season 15 premieres on October 7 at 9/8c to find out what the future holds for Joe Cruz, all signs are pointing towards him surviving the events of the season 14 finale.
According to reports, Minoso is slated to appear in a handful of episodes at the beginning of season 15 as part of an exit storyline for his character. With Minoso appearing in a number of episodes to wrap up Cruz's storyline, it would seem to suggest he survives the fire; however, we'll have to see whether the show perhaps looks to use the finale storyline to set up his exit.
We have seen the show write characters out many times in the past via injuries that prevent them from continuing within the CFD. Given Cruz was inside the building when the roof appeared to collapse, there is a chance that he could survive but sustain an injury that will prevent him from returning to active duty. The writers could then use those few episodes in Minoso's return arc to follow his recovery and him coming to terms with the decision to step away from the CFD.
There is also a chance that Cruz could choose to step away from the CFD after the brush with death in simply no longer wishing to put his life on the line as a firefighter upon the birth of his twins. We saw how impacted Cruz was during the events of the 2026 One Chicago crossover when he had a brush with death in a moment that made him realize the impact his career has on his wife and kids.
With Cruz and Chloe's family growing and Javi having already lost so much, we could absolutely see a world in which Cruz decides to step away from the CFD and therefore leave 51. Just hours before news of Minoso's exit broke, One Chicago Center broke the news that casting is underway for twin infants. It seems likely that Cruz's exit will be tied to the birth of his twins, so his exiting the CFD timed to their birth would allow for a natural exit storyline.
Of course, no matter how the show chooses to write Minoso out, it's not going to lessen the sting of losing yet another original cast member.
