Heading into the Chicago Fire season 15 premiere, fans are on high alert and wondering whether there are any characters who might not make it out of the episode alive. It’s an understandable fear for all to have, as the episode left the lives of basically every character up in the air in a brilliant cliffhanger that has kept fans talking all summer long.
As the season 14 finale came to a close, half of Firehouse 51’s responding unit was racing to make it down from the roof on the rig when they were caught in a ball of fire erupting from the building. Meanwhile, the rest of the team was trapped in the building after the explosion that caused the ball of fire also sent the roof caving in. Mayday calls came through on the radios outside as Violet, Novak, and Pascal watched outside in horror.
The finale felt very reminiscent of the season 2 finale, which ended in a similar manner with the lives of nearly every character on the line as a result of a call gone wrong. And as long-time viewers know, that finale ended up resulting in a major death at the start of season 3, which is why fans worry history might repeat itself.
When news broke that Joe Minoso would be leaving Chicago Fire, fans immediately began to speculate that Cruz would not make it out alive. It’s certainly a justified fear and theory to have, as it would make sense given we know Minoso will be leaving the show and set photos have definitely given fans an added cause for concern. However, it seems unlikely that NBC would allow news of his exit to be reported so widely if that was actually the case.
If they were truly going to kill Cruz off, we imagine NBC would try to keep Minoso’s exit close to the vest so as not to spoil the outcome of the cliffhanger. While leaks can happen, the Wolf Entertainment team has a history of keeping major deaths under wraps until the moment they occur on-screen, so if Cruz were set to be killed off, you’d have to imagine they wouldn’t announce Minoso’s exit so directly. However, there is another cast exit that also broke, which has us wondering if perhaps the writers are going to flip the script on fans with an unexpected death.
Chief Pascal could be killed off in the Chicago Fire season 15 premiere
From the minute the Chicago Fire season 14 finale ended, everyone began to speculate about who might die in the season 15 premiere. In the weeks that have followed, we’ve all been operating under the assumption that every character is fair game with the exception of Violet, Novak, and Pascal because the trio was outside the building, watching in horror much like the audience at home as things played out. However, knowing that Dermot Mulroney is set to exit the show as well, we have to wonder if perhaps the writers might throw us a major curveball by killing off a character no one expected.
We have seen Chicago Fire deploy this tactic in the past, most notably with the death of Evan Hawkins, who died in the line of duty after racing into action to help a struggling civilian escape a movie theater fire. Fans will recall that the promo for the episode made it clear someone would not survive, but Hawkins was never discussed as being in danger as the framing kept the focus on the unit responding from Firehouse 51.
So far, NBC has not released a promo for season 15, but the nature of the finale has left fans speculating that should a death occur, it’ll be someone inside the building or one of the firefighters who were fleeing the roof when they were engulfed in flames from the explosion. No one has been talking about the possibility that Pascal, Novak, or Violet could actually be in danger in the aftermath.
Interestingly, when word broke that Minoso was leaving Chicago Fire, reports indicated that he would be returning for a few episodes to wrap up his storyline; however, Mulroney’s exit will come immediately in the premiere, with reports noting that Mulroney will only appear in the one episode. This could be because he simply leaves town after convincing Severide to turn down the job at OFI, or it could be because Pascal will be the one to perish in the fire.
Pascal might not have been on duty, but he’s a firefighter at heart, and there is no way he won’t rush into action to help his former team in their moment of need—much like how Hawkins rushed into action to save civilians in need. It would be totally unexpected for Pascal to die in the fire while working to save the lives of others, as he was not in any imminent danger as the finale ended, and it would explain why Mulroney’s exit would be so sudden, unlike Minoso’s.
That’s not to say we want Pascal to make the ultimate sacrifice in the premiere, but it would be a fitting sendoff for the character and would give the show a major death that would create ramifications. It would also explain why Mulroney was left feeling bitter about his sudden departure from the show, as no one likes to end their run on a show with such a finite ending as their character being killed off.
