We're less than a quarter into Chicago Fire season 15, and there have already been a number of changes taking place in Firehouse 51. From Cruz's exit being set up for the 300th episode to Severide becoming the new captain to the probies vying for a spot on the squad, there's been a lot of shifting going on. As the latest episode reveal, another possible change was just teased for Kidd.

Chicago Fire season 15 episode 4 marked an ambitious first for the franchise as the episode featured only two series regular characters for a seemingly self-contained story. Severide and Kidd teamed up to help investigate a suspicious arson during their time off from Firehouse 51. However, the episode managed to leave behind two important threads for each character that could be explored later.

While Severide has settled into his new role as captain, Kidd revealed that he had planned to accept the OFI job before Cruz was injured. Perhaps that thread could return later on in season 15 just like another slight hint the episode dropped about Kidd's future with the firehouse. Could she be interested in taking on a larger leadership role for the team?

Kidd spends much of the episode assisting Severide with the arson investigation, which sends her Van Meter's way to gain his insights. It's the first time that either Severide or Kidd has connected with Van Meter since Severide turned down the OFI job, and as we learned in season 15 episode 4, Severide didn't directly inform Van Meter about his decision. But Kidd explains his reasoning.

In the wake of Cruz's injury in the warehouse fire, Severide felt that he needed to step up and take on the leadership position as captain instead of leaving for OFI. He had been set to take on the new position, but his plans changed in an instant. Upon hearing this explanation, Van Meter understands and doesn't hold a grudge against Severide, but he tells Kidd that the firehouse had other options.

Van Meter inspires Kidd to consider a bigger leadership role at Firehouse 51

He alludes to the fact that Severide wasn't the only person the team could have depended on as a leader, suggesting that she was more than capable and qualified to be the new captain. The kind words from Van Meter and the realization of their meaning seems to hit Kidd with surprise. Apparently, she didn't believe in herself as captain or think that was an option. But it is!

Without even being captain, Kidd's already a well-respected authority figure at Firehouse 51 as lieutenant. In season 15, we have watched her train the four firefighter candidates who have really been in need of her careful direction. Time and time again, Kidd has proven that she's a vital part of the firehouse leadership, and it's about time there's a bigger conversation being introduced.

Van Meter alluding to Kidd being a contender for captain feels like a seed has been planted for her season 15 storyline. We already know that there's a "bombshell" coming for Kidd later this season, but the teases surrounding that particular twist suggest something from her past coming back around to stir the pot. But another personal twist could shake things up in a big way.

It's unclear whether Kidd will begin to actively seek out a bigger role at the firehouse, but the thought has been placed in her mind for what's sure to be a slow-burn progression. How would Kidd and Severide even begin to navigate a job swap or start the conversation about their professional dynamic? They have been through much worse, but the intrigue is still totally thrilling.
