As Chicago PD season 13 came to an end, the biggest question fans were left with was what would happen to Imani's sister. Would she be sent to jail after Voight uncovered evidence revealing she had murdered her friend Lila, or would they cover the crime up?

Season 14 opens with a montage jumping back to the night of the Chicago PD season 13 finale, paired with the present day as we watch Imani driving along and flash back to see Voight informing Imani that the choice over what to do with Shari is up to her. That’s right, Voight decides to put the ball in her court, telling Imani that it’s her family and she can decide what actions to take or not take, as nothing is on the record.

Ultimately, Imani seems to have turned her sister in as we watch her arrive for visitation at what appears to be a nearby detention center.

We cut to Voight as he arrives at the precinct which seems to be overrun with an unusually large number of people, crowding the parking lot and the lobby inside. On his way in, Voight literally bumps into a man named Charles Boyden before racing up.

Upstairs in the bullpen, Atwater calls Tasha to check in as we learn the baby hasn’t yet arrived and he seems to be in helicopter dad mode. He ends the call as Voight and Trudy make their way up and we learn this overcrowding of the precinct comes from 200 cops being displaced by OCD headquarters being sold.

Following her visit with Shari, Imani heads out to work, and as Voight calls to check in, Imani hears shots fired and pulls the car over to investigate. She finds a man on the sidewalk severely injured and another woman across the street who has also been shot.

Voight and Burgess roll out to provide backup, as they give chase after the vehicle seen fleeing the scene of the crime, which crashed into another car. The offender takes off on foot as Burgess and Imani follow after him as he races through the rec center. Unfortunately, the suspect evades capture.

Regrouping at HQ, we learn the suspect is a man named Chris, an ex-con and addict who was convicted of murder and recently made parole for good behavior. His parole officer is the victim, Franklin, while the other victim seems to be an instance of the victim being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Imani and Voight head to meet with Franklin, who thanks Imani for saving his life. He informs Imani and Voight that he suspected Chris was using again, but he never tested positive. While Franklin thought Chris had really rehabbed, he suggests that the man is a murderer and is always going to be one.

Ruzek, Burgess, Atwater, and Torres catch a lead on a potential partner, a man named Santo, and head out to round him up. They don’t find Santo there, but they round up several others at the house and bring them in. When they finally find the potential partner, he informs Voight and Imani that the men were at his house as he helps parolees find work after their release, something he helped Chris with as well. Santo is shocked to learn what has happened and is convinced Chris has changed and couldn’t be behind this.

With Santo proving to be no help, Imani suggests that perhaps Santo isn’t lying. They dive into Chris’ phone records, which points them in the direction of a woman named Fritzy, so Voight and Imani head out to speak with her.

When they arrive at the house, they find Fritzy on the ground, foaming at the mouth from an apparent drug overdose. As Voight provides aid, Imani heads inside to check out the house, but no one is inside. They administer Narcan, but it’s sadly too late as she dies on the scene.

Intelligence processes the scene, and it becomes obvious that there was a fight of some kind, as evidenced by dried blood on the sheet. While all signs continue to point towards Chris, Imani isn’t convinced. While processing the scene, Imani gets a call notifying her that Shari has been admitted to the infirmary and races off to check on her sister.

It seems Shari instigated the fight, which landed her in the infirmary, and we learn that Shari accepted a plea deal and will get out of prison soon. Imani assures her she’s right here with her and won’t abandon her as she assures her sister things will get better.

Back at HQ, Imani reviews the evidence and works on the case through the night. After burning the midnight oil, the medical examiner’s report comes in, which suggests that someone wanted Fritzy dead and was banking on it being ruled an overdose. All of her research suggests that Chris was truly clean, but she just can’t seem to find the evidence needed to clear his name.

Intelligence rolls out on an apartment building where Chris may be hiding, and they begin their search through the vacant apartments. As they search, Torres spots Chris outside, and the team give chase on foot, with Torres and Imani eventually cornering him as he professes his innocence as Imani convinces him to drop the gun in his hand and come in peacefully.

They bring Chris into the precinct to interrogate him, and Chris is shocked when Imani reveals that Fritzy is dead. She presses him for information, but he requests a lawyer before giving them any information.

Burgess finally gets through to the lab, which uncovered semen results and a fingerprint that places Franklin, their parole officer, at the scene. Imani questions whether Fritzy and Franklin were in a relationship, but he informs her that Franklin raped her after he found out Fritzy was using again and extorted her for sexual favors in exchange for turning a blind eye. Fritzy finally reached a breaking point and turned him away, which was when he raped her. Imani pleads with Chris for his help, and he admits he saw Fritzy shoot Franklin.

Chicago PD season 14 premiere ends with Tasha going into labor and Voight getting an unwelcome susprise

After speaking with Chris, Imani and Torres head to the hospital to bring Franklin in for questioning. He attempts to flee as the rest of Intelligence roll in to block his vehicle. When he gets out of the car, he’s grabbed a gun and makes it clear he won’t go to jail as he tries to get one of the cops to shoot him. When that plan fails, he raises the gun to his head, but Atwater tackles him before he can pull the trigger, allowing them to arrest him.

As they wrap things up at the scene and get Franklin loaded into a police car to be taken down to the precinct, Atwater gets a call from Tasha informing him the baby is coming. Atwater heads off with Ruzek to the hospital.

Once Ruzek and Atwater have left for the hospital, Imani and Torres continue to process the scene as Torres assures her he’ll always have her back—a reminder that seems to carry more weight in the moment, suggesting perhaps something more could soon develop between the pair.

The following day, Voight pushes Trudy for information and she suggests he head down to the OCD headquarters where he can find the chief and confront him in person.

Voight makes his way to the scene where he confronts the chief about the OCD reassignments. The chief informs Voight that 90% of the personnel will be assigned to patrol, and Voight will have his district back with one difference: All specialized teams are being assigned a federal agent as part of FBI oversight, and his agent is moving into the wire room now. This agent has been tasked with determining if Intelligence is an efficient use of CPD resources.

Meanwhile, Imani gets a surprise of her own when she arrives to visit Shari only to find that she’s no longer on the visitor list. To her surprise, this wasn’t some clerical error or mistake: Shari took her off the visitors’ list and is refusing to see Imani.

When Voight gets back to the precinct, he finds the FBI agent settling in, and this is a familiar face we met early in the episode: the man who spilled water on Voight as he entered the precinct building. Needless to say, the pair didn’t hit it off on the best terms, and it’s going to be interesting to see if this FBI agent will be friend or foe in the long run.

Chicago PD airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC and is available to stream the following day on Peacock.
