Chicago PD had the least going on in terms of a fall finale cliffhanger, but that's not to say there weren't seeds being planted for the future. While the main story arc of the episode, involving Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar), was resolved, the ramifications it had on the IU were not.
In fact, the final moments of the fall finale suggested that there was going to be trouble for the IU moving forward. And the man who seemingly spelled this trouble out for Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) will be returning for the winter premiere on Wednesday, January 8.
Deputy Chief Reid returns for "Friends In the Family"
Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy) is confirmed to be returning for the first Chicago PD episode of 2025. The character appeared in promo photos for the upcoming season 12 episode, which is titled "Friends In the Family."
The character, who was introduced earlier in the season, seemed unimportant enough, until he sidled up to Voight in the fall finale and suggest that they become "friends." It was a friendly gesture on the surface, but the subtext suggested that Reid had dirt on Voight and the rest of the IU.
His bid for friendship felt less like a desire to work together and more like an attempt to blackmail the unit into doing his bidding, lest he reveal what he knows (or at least, suspects) about Voight, Torres and the rest of the team.
Deputy Chief Reid appears alongside the IU during a tense moment in the new episode. He can be seen standing next to Kiana Cook (Toya Turner) in the midst of what appears to be a team meeting. We don't know what role Reid will play in the meeting, whether he is directly involved or observing the decision-making of Voight, but he does not appear to be pleased with what he's seeing and hearing.
Reid will seemingly target IU newbie Kiana Cook
"Friends In the Family" revolves around Cook and her own family's connection to a kidnapping. "Cook turns to her family," the NBC synopsis reads. "When Intelligence faces administrative roadblocks that threaten a kidnapping investigation."
The decision to focus on Cook makes sense given that she is the newest member of the IU, and she is still getting her footing within the show. She has effectively served as the replacement for Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), and she was very much involved in the less-than-legal activities that Dante Torres and the rest of IU enacted during the fall finale.
We're curious to see if Reid will attempt to break her down and get dirt on the team, and whether her knowledge will bring her even closer together with her IU brethren.
