Spoilers ahead for Fire Country season 3 episode 4
We've been waiting for two seasons to learn more about Eve Edward's family and Fire Country season 3 is delivering. Their absence in the Three Rock captain's life in the story so far comes down to an estrangement that's lasted six years. Episode 4, "Keep Your Cool," gives explanation for it after the town of Edgewater suffers through a heat dome that causes Cole Rodman, Eve's favorite fire camp inmate, to collapse at Station 42.
Cole had been waiting to make a phone call to his family when the heat became too much and he fell out in the common room. At first he'd been suspected of running off but Eve knew he wasn't a flight risk and when she found him, she, Sharon, and the Three Rock crew immediately launched into action to cool his body down. They were able to revive Cole with ice packs and an IV drip before he was sent to the hospital where Eve made sure he could see his family in-person.
The incident brought up guilt for the captain as she'd gone through a similar situation with her father years ago. It was back when she was training to be a firefighter. Her family had never been onboard with that decision as she was expected to help work the ranch they owned. Eve had defied their wishes which meant someone had to pick up her slack. Her father was the one to do so and it nearly cost him his life.
While it's not Eve's fault that he suffered a heat stroke while working the land that hasn't stopped her family from laying blame at her feet. When she discussed the situation with Sharon Leone, she didn't elaborate on the words exchanged back then by her and her loved ones but judging by the silence they've let persist for six years and the tears she was crying, they were hurtful.
Sharon, however, gave Eve some sage counsel since it's clear she would like to be back in touch with them. She told the captain that she needs to figure out whether she wants to be right or whether she wants to have her family. Sharon didn't say that Eve wouldn't be able to have both but since her parents aren't picking up the phone to call her, Eve is going to have to be the bigger person and mend bridges if she wants them back in her life. It's that or continue to hurt over a rift she, too, is refusing to fix on principal and because of pride and hurt.
I'm hoping to see the Edwards family heal. It's already been teased that Eve's going to have to head over to the ranch at some point to let her loved ones know they have to start doing controlled burns on their property. That's not going to go over well but it should get the ball rolling for them all to talk and air out their grievances. Eve deserves to have her family in her corner even though her life didn't go the way they planned.
