Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) has not been having an easy time on Chicago Med. The character wrapped up season 8 in a state of marital disaster, and the season 9 premiere confirmed the worst: her husband, Ben (Charles Malik Whitfield), wanted a divorce.

Maggie was constantly being reminded about Ben during the season premiere, and it culminated with her telling Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) that her "perfect husband" wants to end their marriage, and she doesn't know how to handle things.

There was a sliver of hope that Maggie and Ben would be able to hash things out and repair their marriage, but the second episode of the season, made it clear that things are even worse than we realized.

The bulk of the episode focuses on Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) and his struggle to get a kidney transplant, which gets complicated by the appearance of his ex-wife, Leanne (Paula Marshall).

The two argue about the procedure, and the involvement of their son, Sean (Luigi Sotille), which brings about some complicated feelings for Maggie. She talks with Asher about the whole Archer debacle, and the two of them disagree over whether Leanne is in the right to be concerned.

Asher is firmly anti-Leanne, which makes sense given her friendship with Archer, but its the comment she makes about divorce that really touches a sore spot for Maggie. "I mean, she’s still resentful and angry about the divorce," she noted.

Maggie admitted that she feels angry and rejected

In response, Maggie goes to Leanne and opens up about her divorce, and confirms that her and Ben are in the middle of an unpleasant process. There's no saving the marriage at this point-- the divorce is already underway.

Maggie tells Leanne that she and Ben are currently fighting for custody of their cat, and how she's so frustrated with Ben that she's making everything more difficult for him out of spite:

"“I’m just so angry all the time. I don’t recognize myself. I guess I want to hurt him for leaving me. Rejecting me.""

The discussion proved effective, as Leanne changed her mind and agreed to give Archer's transplant her blessing, but it also shows how much emotional turmoil Maggie is currently in.

The character is having to juggle work with an ugly divorce, and we're positive that there will be more to unpack as season 9 gets underway.
