Chicago PD isn't new tonight, but fans won't have to wait long for its return

It's felt like an eternity but the procedural drama is coming back soon.

Scheduling has been an issue for network television in 2024. The Hollywood strikes whittled down the number of episodes for most shows, and in an effort to elongate them to cover the length of a typical season, networks have added more breaks. Two weeks on, two weeks off, and so forth.

It hasn't been ideal, and this latest One Chicago break has been proof. Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD are on a three-week hiatus, which means there are no new episodes on Wednesday, April 24. Fans will have to wait a bit longer to get the lowdown on their favorite PD characters, and the fate of Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).

Chicago PD returns Wednesday, May 1

The good news, however, is that the show will return on Wednesday, May 1 and continue to air until it reaches its season 11 finale. Chicago PD recently wrapped shooting, according to set post made by star Marina Squerciati, which means the network is free to roll out the remaining episodes as they see fit. Chicago PD fans will get to enjoy the May releases without any week long interruptions gumming up the works.

The synopsis for the upcoming episode, suggests that the focus will finally be shifted back to Upton ahead of her departure. We've known all season long that the character will leave by the season 11, but there hasn't been much in the way of narrative reasoning or groundwork. Until now, presumably:

Upton will team up with Petrovic (again)

"Upton becomes consumed with a decades-old missing persons case linked to Petrovic after a young child shows up to the district seeking help."

Once more, Upton will be working alongside Josephine Petrovic (Bojana Novakovic) to break a case involving a child. The synopsis does not, however, clarify whether Petrovic is linked to the case in a legal or illegal way. PD already established that the SVU detective has some skeletons in her closet, but it'll be interesting to see whether Upton uncovers more as she spends more time with her.
