Does the Chicago PD proposal mean Burgess is leaving? Star responds

Lately, marriages have translated to cast exits on One Chicago.

There was a sense of elation at the end of the Chicago PD episode "Safe Harbor", as Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) asked Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) to marry him, and she accepted. It was a sweet moment in an otherwise emotionally devastating episode.

That said, it concerned some of the One Chicago fans who have been noticing a recurring pattern in the franchise. There have been multiple weddings in the last year and a half, and all of them have led to the wedded characters leaving the show.

One Chicago has been writing off their couples

Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) left PD after getting married to Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), and the latter is gearing up to leave in season 11. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) left Chicago Med after tying the knot, and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) is getting ready to do the same after getting married in a couple episodes.

Seeing Ruzek and Burgess get engaged is an exciting prospect, especially since they've tried and failed to get married twice before, but it's fair to question whether the decision to marry the duo off is an excuse to write one, or even both of them, off the show.

Kim Burgess is not leaving Chicago PD anytime soon

Thankfully, this will not be the case. Marina Squerciati recently sat down for an interview with Deadline, and she assured fans that she is not going anywhere despite now having a ring on her character's finger:

"I am not leaving the show, no. We have some changes coming up but I’m still here."

It's nice to have clarity, especially given that the franchise has gone through so many changes in such a short amount of time. It sounds like Chicago PD has a few tricks up its sleeve for the rest of season 11, which will presumably include a wedding, but a sudden Burgess departure will not be one of them.

In fact, Squerciati told Deadline that she was devastated to learn that her co-star, Spiridakos, would be leaving. She admitted that it's been sad to film the last batch of episodes with her longtime friend, knowing that it will mark the end of their working relationship, but is excited for what Spiridakos does next:

"She’s an amazing woman and I’m gonna get really sad. She will kill it on whatever her next venture is. "
