It finally happened. Hailey Upton has left Chicago PD. The character decided that she could no longer deal with the strain of working in the IU, and left the Windy City behind in the season 11 finale. It was a bittersweet sendoff, given that she's been a part of the show for nearly a decade, but the smile on her face confirmed that she was doing the right thing.

What's the "thing," you might ask? Well, evidently, Upton is going to leave the IU to go work for the FBI. The character was shown looking up FBI websites during the season 11 finale, so she seemingly took a page out of her ex-husband's playbook and decided to put her law enforcement skills to use in a different capacity.

It's unlikely that fans will get to see Upton in future seasons of Chicago PD, given that she's no longer in the titular city, but her decision to pursue a career with the FBI raises some interesting possibilities about her future. There is, after all, an FBI franchise set within the same universe as One Chicago. We may be wishful thinking, but we could definitely see a world in which Upton appears on one of the FBI shows.

Evidently, so can the actress who plays her. Tracy Spiridakos recently talked about her decision to leave PD with People Magazine, and she addressed the theory that her character could resurface in another corner of the Dick Wolf universe.

"I would absolutely love that," Spiridakos told the outlet. "The Dick Wolf franchise has been one of the greatest experiences of my career. The way that they work as a company is not even as a company." She also noted that the crossovers between shows would allow her to slide over without needing a ton of backstory:

"It's very familial, and I feel like they're family and friends, so I would love to be a part of their universe, for sure."

This would be an incredible development for PD and FBI fans, but there's also a potential downside. Upton is seemingly starting over, and trying to find some semblance of happiness in her personal life. If she were to pop up in another grim procedural drama, it would sort of undermine the decision she made during the season 11 finale. At least, if she were to join FBI full-time.

If Spiridakos wants to make a one-off cameo as Upton in FBI, though, we would absolutely be here for it.
