What's next for Kim Burgess in Chicago PD season 12?
There's oftentimes a dissonance between a character's importance and their screen time on Chicago PD. It's largely due to the revolving door focus of the show. The writing team focuses on a different IU member each episode, and with such a large ensemble, it can be a while before it comes back around to your favorite.
Such is the case with Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati). The character is a vital part of PD's appeal, but she didn't have a ton to do during the last stretch of season 11. She was sidelined in favor or Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). She was around, but there wasn't much in terms of character growth.
There will be more focus on Burgess in season 12
This contrasts with the first half of season 11, which saw Burgess get engaged to Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger). It was a big development for the couple, despite the fact that they've been engaged before. They finally seem as though they are ready to take the next step together, and PD showrunner Gwen Sigan said as much during an interview with TV Line.
Sigan hinted at more of a focus on the Burzek engagement in season 12. She also noted that there will be happy moments, which can sometimes be hard to come by in the bleak world of Chicago PD:
"“I’m very excited to get into it. So few times on this show do you get these really happy moments... I think it’ll be fun [to write]."
Chicago PD boss has teased Burgess' wedding
The showrunner was hesitant to give a definitive answer on whether Burgess and Ruzek will tie the knot in season 12, but it was previously stated that there will be less will-they/won't-they drama that the seasons prior.
"There’s definitely a possibility of, 'Are we going to do the wedding next year?'," she noted. "Are we going to do the planning? What are we going to see?' So, I’m excited to figure out all of that." Sigan also teased the involvement of Burzek's daughter, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams), and Ruzek's family.
Burgess has a wedding to plan and a personal life to nourish in season 12. Regardless of whether she gets married or not, she's faring better than some of her more troubled IU peers.
