Fans of Chicago PD looking for something to watch tonight should check out Carter, which stars former Chicago PD recurring player Sydney Poitier Heartsong.
Heartsong, who portrayed Detective Mia Sumner in One Chicago, is now fighting crime in a small town in Canada in the WGN America original series.
She plays the straight-laced Sam Shaw, whose detective work is upended by her childhood friend Harley Carter, portrayed by Jerry O’Connell.
The duo and their friend Dave Leigh (Orphan Black‘s Kristian Bruun) once solved a crime when they were kids, and now that Harley’s Hollywood career has imploded, he has dreams of getting back in the investigating business.

In tonight’s second episode, called “The Astronaut and the Lion King,” Harley has officially been named a police consultant following his success with a recent murder case.
He immediately begins exerting his newfound influence. One of his superfans from his acting career petitions him to re-examine a cold case, and he then takes it to Sam, hoping to persuade her to dive into the mysterious happenings at a local factory.

What does that have to do with either space or a famous Disney film turned Broadway musical? It’s not entirely clear, so you’ll have to watch and find out.
One-part detective series, one-part quirky small-town comedy, Carter is a definite change of pace from Chicago PD but an interesting great summer alternative while you’re waiting for One Chicago to start up again.
Sam Shaw certainly doesn’t have as much to worry about as Mia Sumner, but it will still be quite an adventure for her—and Carter season 1 is easy to watch, since you can find the channel in your area here.

"Harley Carter takes on his first case as the official consulting detective for the Bishop P.D. after an emotionally-disturbed superfan convinces him to re-open a cold case. Harley enlists best friends Sam Shaw and Dave Leigh to help solve a murder mystery in Bishop’s old Hancock Paint Factory that went up in flames years ago."
