Chicago PD saying its final goodbye to Alvin Olinsky is One Chicago Center’s Moment of the Week for Sept. 26, from the Chicago PD season 6 premiere.

This week’s One Chicago Moment of the Week honors go to Chicago PD, for Alvin Olinsky’s funeral at the conclusion of the Chicago PD season 6 premiere “New Normal.”

Olinsky’s funeral was an important moment for everyone in the Intelligence Unit. They were able to mourn their fallen friend, and officially lay him to rest before trying to move on without him.

It was exactly the kind of tear-jerking scene that One Chicago fans expected it would be, from the members of Intelligence acting as pallbearers to Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) being asked not to be there.

But it was also the moment that Chicago PD‘s audience deserved.

Killing off Olinsky (Elias Koteas) in last season’s finale is still a controversial decision within the One Chicago fandom. Many people continue to disagree with it, and the explanation for his death didn’t go over that well either.

So in some ways, it was still an open wound. And the show didn’t really give the audience any ways to deal with it.

The one scene where Chicago PD‘s characters got to mourn Olinsky was cut out of the season finale and relegated to YouTube—then deleted from YouTube before NBC put it back up.

We didn’t get to see the characters go through the grieving process, so in turn, we didn’t get to be part of it either. That changed in “New Normal” as we saw the end of Olinsky’s funeral.

It allowed the audience to start letting go along with the characters. And it said a lot about those characters, too, particularly Voight saluting his fallen friend from a distance, finding a way to honor him even if he also wanted to respect Meredith’s wishes.

It was finally the moment we needed, and wanted, and should have had all along. And as much as we still think there are reasons why the show will regret killing Olinsky, it’s closure.

dark. Next. Will Chicago PD replace Olinsky?

Congratulations to Chicago PD for having our Moment of the Week! Which moment was the most memorable to you this week? Let us know in the comments!
