What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Med episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “Backed Against The Wall.”

“Backed Against The Wall” involved Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) dealing with immigration law while trying to save a leukemia patient, while her fiance had to make a very tough choice now that he knew he’d gotten involved with a gangster.

If you missed any of last night’s episode, or just want a refresher on the events that we’re going to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago Med recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Natalie was right

We’ve been critical of Natalie’s moral indignation in the past, but in this episode she was totally on the mark. The bleak way this episode ends says that a wife and mother may possibly die, because the one person who could save her life got arrested. To say nothing of that man’s pregnant wife!

This grim storyline was perfect for Natalie, who’s always been willing to fight for what she believes is right. She expressed everything that the audience was feeling, from confusion to shock and anger.

Here’s some more food for thought: this is the second Dick Wolf show in three weeks to tackle U.S. immigration policy.

SVU also had an episode about illegal immigration with “Zero Tolerance” which, like this installment, was pretty obvious in its criticism of current policy. Like that episode, this one wound up feeling kind of preachy. But that didn’t stop us from feeling angry, too.

2) Connor and Ava are headed for a blow-up

No one was surprised when Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) and Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) were reunited in this episode. The duo even conceded that they’d be working together again when they came up with the hybrid OR idea.

Add in the foreshadowing of Connor having booted Ava out of his operating room previously, and the writing was on the wall, as far as Chicago Med needing to have them reconcile. Though there was another spat, the two of them ended the week in a good place—which means it won’t last.

Connor and Ava could be great friends and colleagues, but that’s not what this show wants to see for them. It wants them to push each other. It would be no surprise at all if Ava’s secret about how the OR got its money comes out within the next episode or two, so Ava and Connor can get back to their love-hate relationship.

3) Weekend at Bernie’s

Chicago Med opened this episode by introducing audiences to Bernie, the father of Emily Choi’s (Arden Cho) baby. It was a surprise to everyone that Bernie wasn’t some wayward, unemployed and useless guy—he was a well-dressed, soft-spoken man some 20 years older than Emily!

Kudos to Chicago Med for not making Bernie the stereotypical character he could’ve been and making Dr. Ethan Choi’s (Brian Tee) skepticism justified. The Emily storyline is so much more worth watching because it’s not playing by numbers. And by the end of the episode, it was hard not to root for Bernie, who insisted that he was going to do right by his future child.

It’s still hard to gauge where this story is ultimately going to go. But the show took a great step in the right direction by bringing in a character who was not easy to dismiss—and making the fans hope that Choi’s instincts are wrong just this one time.
