4. Gwen Garrett

The One Chicago universe scored in a big way when stage legend Heather Headley (Aida) joined Chicago Med at the end of last season. Her role as hospital Chief Operating Officer has expanded into a recurring part during Chicago Med season 4, and it’s a joy to see the Grammy and Tony Award winner on screen whenever she appears. She’s a fantastic actress, and her scenes with S. Epatha Merkerson are brilliant.

However, the show has misfired with the writing of her character. To have Gwen as a bureaucrat was one thing; to have her be so underhanded that she’d use a braindead Pat Halstead to prop up the hospital’s numbers put her beyond any kind of redemption. She’s been mostly absent since then, but it’s hard to see how the character comes back from that (or if the writers even want her to be more than a villain). Which is a shame, because Headley is so good that she could become a fan favorite—if Gwen gets the writing that the actress deserves.

Chicago Fire

3. Kyle Sheffield

Kyle Sheffield (Teddy Sears) is a recent addition to both Chicago Fire and Firehouse 51, as the new chaplain in town. And though he’s only appeared in two episodes, he’s already added some charm to One Chicago—which is kind of amusing when you remember that Sears played a cantankerous CTU agent on 24: Legacy and a super-villain on The Flash!

But Kyle has also provided some interesting new story possibilities for the show, too. He has some history with Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) that not only added to her backstory, but made us want to know more about him. The show is also positioning him as a love interest for Foster’s partner Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), which would spell the end of Brettonio but is better for her than that angsty back and forth that Chicago Fire put those two through over last season.
