What should fans watch for in this week’s Chicago PD? Get ready for The Forgotten with our Chicago PD season 6, episode 16 preview.

The next Chicago PD unleashes a serial killer on Chicago, which may actually not be a bad thing for One Chicago fans.

Wednesday’s episode, called “The Forgotten,” sees Intelligence open a murder case that turns into something much bigger. They soon find themselves chasing a violent criminal, and that’s the kind of tension that the show hasn’t always had this season.

The seventh season’s had some good cases, but it’s also spent a lot of time on the political angle with the mayoral election, and the relationships (namely the one between Hailey Upton and Adam Ruzek).

Even the last stand-alone episode, “Ties That Bind”, was a tense episode but also clearly crafted to focus on the tension between Upton and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) after Burgess found out Upton was dating her ex.

To have an episode where the case comes first, and Chicago PD stays focused mostly on that, is a good change of pace. The series doesn’t want to get too far away from being a police drama—everything else should enhance or support that, not take away from it.

After all, viewers know that the writers can string together a great thriller. Remember “Captive” last season that was a nail-biter? Or the Gregory Yates crossover arc from a few seasons ago?

It’s easy to do, and would be a welcome break from the Kelton, Price, Brennan, etc. of it all.

But if “The Forgotten” is a standalone episode, then it’s limited in what it’s going to tell us about Intelligence and the people in it, too. There is some kind of political angle to this case, based on the synopsis for this episode, so there might be an angle for Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) in there.

Who’s going to have the connection to the bad guy this time? Both Price and Kelton have been proven to associate with guilty parties. Will this just be more of the same? Hopefully not, because this one could be the kind of episode that keeps fans up at night—if it’s willing to throw all that aside and just be a great crime show.
