Chicago Fire season 7, episode 21 preview: The White Whale
What should fans watch for in tonight’s Chicago Fire? Get ready for The White Whale with our Chicago Fire season 7, episode 21 preview.
After Chicago Fire clearly set up its season-ending storylines last week, this week’s episode will continue to push them along—but expect at least one surprise before the end of the hour.
Wednesday’s installment “The White Whale” has the same A-story as the previous installment, “Try Like Hell.” Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) is on the trail of an arsonist, after discovering at the end of the prior episode his personal connection to the case.
Severide now knows that the person who set fire to a salon is the same person, or at least is tied to the person, his father Benny had been trying to pin down over ten years ago. So what was just a case of the week, has now become a personal storyline instead.
It feels unlikely that the show will resolve the plotline in this episode, too, because this has the feel of a season finale plot all over it. It’s both dramatic and emotional (for Severide at least), and there wouldn’t be time to whip up suspense for something else with what’s left of the season anyway.

So where is this going to go? Fans have seen how far Severide will go when he feels something’s personal, and he has experience with arsonists and his loved ones—remember the truth behind the fire that killed his best friend Leslie Shay (Lauren German)?
While this arsonist didn’t harm Benny specifically, Kelly will no doubt feel a need to stop the criminal in his dad’s memory.

And given how Chicago Fire also likes to almost kill Severide off, it could easily culminate in a life-threatening situation (though we’ll remind you now that Taylor Kinney is under contract for next season).
With those two factors in mind, it would be no surprise if this episode ends in some big, dramatic cliffhanger itself, or sets up an even bigger one for the start of season 8. After all, the One Chicago franchise loves cliffhangers!
On a happier note, the show made clear last week that Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) are the next love connection. Will “The White Whale” have one of them make a move, or just continue to have the thoughtful looks and nudging moments and make audiences wait for what everyone knows is coming?
That’s the balance of this episode. With everything so clearly laid out last week, the series has a lot to pay off, but it could either do it this Wednesday and come up with whole new bombshells, or stretch its current stories out another week. Either one is possible, so you’ll have to watch and see which way the writers go.
