Chicago Med season 4’s most memorable guest stars
Chicago Med’s fourth season had plenty of guest star appearances, but who left the biggest impact? Here are Chicago Med season 4’s best guests.
Guest stars are an important part of every TV show, and Chicago Med is no exception. It’s the guests who play the patients of the week, their friends and family, and everyone else that the main characters interact with.
The fourth season once again had a wide variety of guest stars, from big names who joined the series for the first time to familiar faces coming back for bigger stories this time around. And a few of them were head and shoulders above the rest.
Whether it was because they held our attention in some way, or they were part of a great plotline, these are the folks whom the season wouldn’t have been the same without.
Here are our picks for the best guests from Chicago Med season 4; tell us which guest stars landed on your short list in the comments at the end of the article.

3) Anna Enger Ritch
Anna Enger Ritch played FBI agent Ingrid Lee, who was Dr. Will Halstead’s (Nick Gehlfuss) handler as he worked undercover for half of the season. It was kind of a thankless role, but she did very well with what she was given.
When Lee was originally introduced in the first part of the season, she was the stock law enforcement type—telling Will what to do and not interested in any of his opinions about it. But Ritch at least kept her watchable, and when the show finally gave her some backstory in the episode “Tell Me The Truth” she had us caring for Lee and wanting to know more about her.
She also deserves credit for dealing with the curveball that somewhere in there, Lee developed a crush on Will. Chicago Med hinted at the idea by having them conveniently become neighbors but it never did anything significant on-screen, making it awkward in the finale when Lee figured out that he was still in love with Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto). There was no real context to her heartbreak, but the fact we still felt it break speaks to Ritch’s talent.
Ritch’s performance also impressed Dick Wolf; he promptly cast her as a series regular in his New York Undercover reboot, though the pilot wasn’t picked up by ABC.

2) Heather Headley
Gwen Garrett was one of those characters Chicago Med fans loved to hate, but there’s also no denying how awesome it was to have Heather Headley as a recurring guest star during the fourth season.
Introduced in the third season finale, the Tony Award winner appeared in multiple episodes during this season. And for the most part, her character behaved exactly as viewers expected—being the character more concerned about profit and loss than saving lives, even if she had to do something underhanded (we’ll never forgive her for the whole controversy over Will’s dad’s life support).
But Headley was so great in the role, particularly in her scenes with S. Epatha Merkerson. She made us want to like Gwen, at least until she did the next frustrating thing. And she also made us wish her character had been more three-dimensional, because she could’ve done even more with different writing. She was brilliant, and who knows if she’ll be back next season?
1) Paula Newsome
Chicago Med landed a big name when it cast Paula Newsome to play Caroline Charles, Dr. Daniel Charles’ (Oliver Platt) ex-wife. Newsome is a veteran actress whom you’ve seen around on a lot of TV shows. She played Leon Vance’s wife on NCIS, currently stars in Barry, and starred in Women’s Murder Club, to name just a few.
When she appeared as Caroline it was a surprise, but a very pleasant one. Newsome and Oliver Platt meshed well together—you really did believe these two had been married and had a child together. And she got the season’s biggest supporting character storyline, as Caroline battled cancer, then wound up remarried to her ex-husband.
She did some very hard, very emotional work and did it with class and dignity. It remains to be seen if Caroline’s story will continue into Chicago Med season 5, but we hope so because we want to see more of her.
