Look back at where Chicago Fire began this summer. Read our retrospective on the fifteenth episode as we rewatch Chicago Fire season 1, episode 15.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Fire season 1, episode 15.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Fire season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

“Nazdarovya” continues the storyline about Antonio Dawson’s (Jon Seda) shooting, which wraps up in the Chicago PD season finale. Here on this show, his sister Gabriela (Monica Raymund) asks questions about what got him shot—because as fans know, she always digs deeper when she’s not satisfied with something.

That means a guest appearance by Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), who’s an ally now as he helps her with leads on the case. It’s interesting to see Voight being helpful here, since it was only earlier in this same season he was the bad guy!

But how quickly things change. Meanwhile, the arrival of his ex-fiancee’s brother in the previous episode leads to Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) making an effort to track her down.

He finds out that Renee Whaley has become a stripper, and by the end of the episode, she’s overdosed on drugs. Watching this storyline the second time around, it prompts the question if Severide’s now very long history of dating was a result of this one relationship going bust or if he’s always been that way.

Speaking of busts, there’s a storyline about the preparation to open Molly’s and a silent partner (Mike Starr) that doesn’t really work. To be fair, though, it probably just exists to provide some way to break up the many personal-drama scenes that “Nazdarovya” is full of.

Because in addition to Dawson and Severide, there’s also Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) dealing with his mother Nancy (Kathleen Quinlan) and the mystery of why she killed his father. Nancy is a character who hasn’t been seen since season 1.

When Chicago Fire has explored Dawson’s parents and Severide’s parents, it’s kind of odd that we haven’t seen more of Casey’s mom in later seasons. There’s an explanation given for that in “Viral” but with a few years having passed, it’d be intriguing if she somehow resurfaced—especially with everything that’s happened in Casey’s life since. Would he react to her differently?

Several personal storylines are all going in this episode, and they generally get resolved by the end of the hour, all of them leaving some kind of mark on the respective character. It feels like almost too much is being done in one installment. But if you want to look back at a lot of revelations, this is one of those episodes that has its place in canon just because so many facts are dropped.
