1) When will Natalie learn?
This episode skipped ahead several weeks, to show fans Dr. Natalie Manning’s (Torrey DeVitto) first day on the job. But it only sort of addressed the fact that her not-fiancee is lying to her!
The only time the topic came up was when her former fiancee Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) randomly tried to tell Natalie he didn’t think she had been breaking her engagement news to him on the night of their car accident. He brought it up out of nowhere, and didn’t do a good job making his case either.
Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) knows the truth, so why hasn’t he said anything to Natalie? He may not have hard physical proof, but he was there when she was brought in; his testimony should carry some weight. So why hasn’t he brought it to her attention—if only because if her fiance is manipulating her like this, couldn’t he also be potentially hazardous to her well-being, too?
(And how much did Ian Harding get paid to appear in that one, dialogue-less scene where Phillip is waiting for Natalie in the waiting room?)

2) Choi was too hard on Steve
Sorry, April, but we’re with Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) on this: Choi pushed Steve a bit too hard and contributed to the med student’s burnout. What was he thinking asking Steve if he wanted to join the ambulance rescue team? Choi already had Marcel coming with him, so it wasn’t like he needed an extra pair of hands.
Or did he really think they needed three people? But even so, who just plucks a med student out of the group minutes after they’ve been getting their orientation speech? No matter how eager Steve was, he was absolutely not ready.
On that note: give Steve props for jumping in and helping out with all the power outage craziness. But if the hospital was so short-handed, what happened to the rest of the med students? The only ones fans saw working were him and Elsa Curry (Molly Bernard). So were the others drafted into service elsewhere, or was it just Steve getting all the stress?
3) Marcel’s kind of a jerk
After he had such a promising start, our opinion of Marcel took a nose-dive this week. Was it supposed to be funny or cool that he was lounging in an ED bed, utilizing an IV of fluids to help him get over his sleep deprivation or hangover? Because it was neither, and what would Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) think of his use of hospital resources?
This whole episode felt like a different Crockett Marcel than the one we met in the Chicago Med premiere. Instead of a dedicated doctor who wasn’t afraid to call it like it is, instead the writing was trying too hard to make him flippant and show us how cool he was. It was almost like he was just casually strolling through the episode.
If he’s supposed to be the replacement for Connor, this Marcel is the kind of guy Connor would punch in the face. Let’s see which Marcel we get next week.
