Brian Geraghty has joined David E. Kelley’s ABC series The Big Sky to play a serial killer, less than a week after he returned to Chicago PD.

Brian Geraghty killed someone in last week’s Chicago PD, and now he’ll be killing a lot more people as a series regular in the ABC thriller The Big Sky.

Geraghty has been cast as the antagonist in the upcoming series, which is created by legendary TV producer David E. Kelley (Mr. Mercedes, The Practice) and based on the novel The Highway by C.J. Box.

His character Ronald Pergman is described as “a blue-collar long-haul trucker with a disturbing dark side,” according to Deadline, which first reported his casting.

That gets even more damning when you read the synopsis of the series: two private detectives are on the search for “two sisters who have been kidnapped by a truck driver on a remote highway in Montana.

“When they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken.”

It’s a little bit ironic, because the big talking point of Geraghty’s recent return to Chicago PD was a “twist” ending that his character had committed a murder.

Sean Roman had returned to Chicago looking for his missing sister, and then killed the drug dealer who was responsible for her death. But in typical Chicago PD fashion, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) allowed him to escape justice.

Now Brian Geraghty joins Katheryn Winnick (Vikings, Wu Assassins), Ryan Philippe (Shooter, Secrets & Lies), Dedee Pfeiffer and John Carroll Lynch in The Big Sky, which already has a series order at ABC, but no premiere date yet.

The casting is great for Chicago PD fans, many of whom missed Roman and were hopeful that he would return as a series regular; that’s not the case, but at least you’ll be able to see Geraghty in a weekly role someplace else—at least until his character is inevitably arrested or killed, because one would figure Ronald has to be brought to justice at some point.

It’s not good news for the actor’s current series Briarpatch, which moved out of its time slot after just two episodes. Both Brian Geraghty and the show’s lead Rosario Dawson have signed up for new projects, suggesting that the USA mystery could be short-lived.
