Will Lisseth Chavez return during Chicago PD season 8?

Lisseth Chavez is no longer a Chicago PD cast member—but will her character Vanessa Rojas come back in Chicago PD season 8 for one last appearance?

Warner Bros. announced Saturday that Chavez had joined the regular cast of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, therefore revealing that she will not be returning to Chicago PD when it starts season 8 in November.

She’s the second PD star to leave the show in as many seasons. Which prompts the question: will she be brought back to get any kind of sendoff, or will her departure be handled off-screen?

It’s already well-known that the new season will pick up almost immediately from the end of season 7, since the last scene set up a cliffhanger involving Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins).

Given that Rojas is Atwater’s partner, and at one point was teased as his love interest (although that never came to pass), it would seem like she has to be part of the season 8 premiere. With no time jump, would she even have time to be anywhere else?

However, Chicago PD has developed a reputation for off-screen exits that have left fans wanting more.

Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) left for New York off-screen. Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) was attacked on-screen, but his death wasn’t confirmed until the next episode. And Rojas’ predecessor, Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) wasn’t seen in the last episode dealing with his character—it was just said that he had been taken off to rehab again.

None of those characters had a real farewell moment, and if the show wasn’t able to work that in for three characters who had longer tenures and larger followings than Vanessa Rojas, it doesn’t seem like that Lisseth Chavez will get a swan song either.

However, there’s one caveat: if the writers take the most obvious route of saying that Rojas was pulled out of Intelligence for another undercover operation, she could emerge from undercover in a later episode. That’s an easy way to work her back into any story of the week.

It just depends on if the writers feel there’s anything left to say with her—after all, she was only around for one season and didn’t leave any loose ends to be resolved—and the fact that Lisseth Chavez has a new job. With Rojas only having been around for one season, and Chavez about to be busy on another show, don’t get your hopes up for her to make a return appearance in the One Chicago world anytime soon.
