Chicago PD actor LaRoyce Hawkins, who portrays Kevin Atwater, is no stranger to giving back to the community—and now he’s supported a new project in his hometown.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Hawkins recently funded a mural in his hometown of Harvey, Illinois with the aim of bringing hope to the community.

Just half an hour away from the heart of Chicago, the new Harvey World Wall features the work of four Black artists, with each piece blending into the next. It rests on the side of Restoration Ministries on Broadway Avenue in downtown Harvey.

Hawkins told the Chicago Sun-Times that “We wanted to do something that we knew would be the inverse of the attack of darkness; we want to attack with light—and this wall is just the first step.”

He coordinated the project after meeting local muralist Amoz Wright. Through Wright, Hawkins then connected with the artists who contributed to the mural: Nefertiti Abdulmalik, David Isreal, Dante Lyles, and Caleb M. Harris.

“When COVID first was impacting us, there was a strong feeling of loss of hope,” Abdulmalik told the Tribune about her participation in the Harvey World Wall. “My first instinct is to help lift that. I want to help people to feel hope that we can get through anything.”

Hawkins also felt the same sense of wanting to bring hope to his community while people were suffering during the pandemic, and the 80-foot mural isn’t the only thing the Chicago PD star has done to give back over the years.

He has hosted the annual Patrick Lives On fundraiser, which aims to help protect children from violence; several of his One Chicago colleagues have participated as well.
