When Chicago Med kicked off its seventh season last Wednesday night, there was one glaring absence from the episode: Brian Tee‘s Dr. Ethan Choi.
While we anticipated the season 7 premiere would be without Yaya DaCosta and were pleasantly surprised to see Torrey DeVitto return for one final goodbye, there had been no indication that Tee would also be MIA in the opening hour of the season. However, that was indeed the case as the episode came and went without any appearance from Dr. Choi.
What happened to Ethan on Chicago Med?
As fans will recall, in the season 6 finale, Ethan was shot by one of Dean’s (Steven Weber) former patients after a confrontation outside of Med. After being shot, Ethan was rushed into emergency surgery and was last seen recovering from the complicated procedure with a long recovery ahead of him.

The thought heading into the season 7 premiere was that Ethan would be laid up and recovering from his injuries, with his recovery playing out across the episode. Instead, it was revealed that Ethan was away recovering from his injuries away from Med.
When will Ethan return to Chicago Med?
While we’d love to report that Ethan will be back in action within the second or third episode of season 7, it appears the writers have different plans in place. Plans that will see Ethan off-screen for several episodes still to come.
As Chicago Med showrunner Diane Frolov revealed in a recent interview with TVLine, Ethan will not be coming back “until several episodes down the line.” In other words, it seems Ethan is going to be recovering off-screen for longer than we anticipated and will be missing more than just an episode.
The good news is that Ethan will return as Brian Tee signed a new contract with the show over the offseason. The bad news is that it seems he’s going to be in fewer episodes than usual this season, due in part to his role in Amazon’s Expats.
