Leading up to the Chicago Fire season 14 finale, we knew that we would be in store for a number of exciting surprises and returns. With each finale, we can always expect unpredictable moments from this show, but as it turns out Chief Pascal wasn't the only one who made a triumphant return to Firehouse 51 in the finale. Severide and Kidd had a visitor, too.

Before Chicago Fire season 14 episode 21 aired, the synopsis for the finale teased that the fan-favorite couple would "welcome a surprise visitor." Naturally, that could mean a number of characters from past or present making a return appearance in the show after a lengthy amount of time away. Once this tease dropped, fans began making their predictions on who it could be.

Upon reading the pointed tease in the synopsis, obvious choices like Boden or Pascal didn't seem quite right. But the penultimate episode of season 14 revealed the reason Kidd had to rush away and likely spoiled their surprise visitor. We've been counting down the days until the season finale would arrive so we could get the answer to this burning question, and now we finally know.

Isaiah returns in the Chicago Fire season 14 finale.

During the season 14 finale, Severide and Kidd unexpectedly find Isaiah at Firehouse 51 touring an engine with Vasquez. He's in town with Lydia, and she dropped him off at the firehouse. He's staying with his former foster parents while he's in town visiting them and some friends. However, it's turns out that Lydia's still in Cleveland and didn't know Isaiah left to visit them in Chicago.

Isaiah reveals that his mother isn't able to take care of him anymore and he will have to live with Lydia. But he doesn't want that. He wants to move back in with Severide and Kidd in Chicago. They are more than open to taking him back in, so long as they meet with his mother in Cleveland and make the decision together. They plan to take the trip after their next shift, but there's no way they could have known they would be on a call that would put the whole team's lives on the line.

Isaiah's reentry into their live seemed to sway Severide toward accepting the position at OFI over continuing at Firehouse 51 as captain. Kidd agreed with Isaiah that it would be nice for him to have a job where he isn't at risk every day. But now, both Severide and Kidd are in danger as Isaiah places a shirt in his dresser in his room at their apartment. Season 15 can't come soon enough!

In last week's episode, Severide announced that Kidd needed to rush of to Cleveland to be by Isaiah's side after his mother suffered a setback in her recovery. According to Severide, Isaiah's mother is expected to be okay, but the setback spooked him. While this moment felt like a simple way to write out Kidd for an episode, it also managed to point to a bigger storyline to come.

The mention of Kidd rushing to be with Isaiah in Cleveland was the first major update we have received on their former foster child since he was written out in season 14 episode 9. Isaiah left Chicago to return home with a family friend in Cleveland and be closer to his mother. His departure was a defining moment for Kidd and Severide as a couple as they felt his absence immediately.

It's no surprise that Chicago Fire opted to bring Isaiah back into the picture for Kidd and Severide. After Severide's name was cleared when the Internal Affairs investigation was resolved, he could finally have a sigh of relief and look to the future. Whether he chooses to continue on as captain or pursue a role at OFI remains up in the air until season 15 premieres.

The season 13 finale ended with Kidd telling Severide that she's pregnant, but the season 14 premiere began with the devastating news that it was a false positive. The couple fostered Isaiah as they explored their parenthood journey, and bringing him back into their home is the right call for the couple continue to pursue building a family. It's the right time for this Stellaride development.
