Chicago Fire is no stranger to cast shake-ups, but that doesn’t make it any easier on fans when the show undergoes a major behind-the-scenes shake-up.
Heading into season 15, we’ve been anticipating that a cast exit could be coming. Chicago Fire season 14 ended with a major cliffhanger that left the lives of virtually every member of the Firehouse 51 team on the line. Given that half of the team ended the season being engulfed in a ball of fire while the other half was trapped inside the building as the roof collapsed, it would be unwise to assume that everyone will make it out of the fire unscathed.
Fans have been speculating that someone might not make it out of the fire alive, and there has been a lot of heat on Herrmann, Mouch, and Cruz, in particular. This is because the show chose to intertwine shots of each of the three characters’ wives alongside shots of them on screen in a moment that left fans fearing the worst for the trio.
While we don’t yet know what will happen, one thing that seems to have been confirmed via the news of Joe Minoso’s exit is that Cruz should survive the fire.
Cruz is unlikely to die in the Chicago Fire season 15 premiere
Days after production began on Chicago Fire season 15, word broke that Joe Minoso would be exiting the series after 14 seasons on the show. It was news that no one saw coming and has shaken the fans, but it does bring a hopeful update for Cruz.
Although we’re incredibly disappointed by the news that Minoso will be leaving Chicago Fire, there is one silver lining that seems to have come with news of his exit. In announcing his departure, it has been reported that Minoso will return for several episodes to wrap up Cruz’s storyline on the show.
With Minoso set to return for a multi-episode arc at the top of the season, it seems that Cruz will not be killed off in the premiere, and we also don’t suspect he’ll be killed off as a result of the fire later in the season either. After all, there would be no real point of dragging out Cruz’s death beyond the premiere if the endgame were still for Minoso to exit the show.
What seems likely to happen is that Cruz might be injured in the fire or have a near-death experience and realize that this line of work is no longer what’s best for his family. We saw him struggling with the way his job impacts his family in season 14 after he looked death in the face during the One Chicago crossover, and another close call could make him hang up his firefighter hat for good — especially now that his family is growing again with Chloe revealed to be pregnant with twins.
We know that the show is casting infant twins, and we have to wonder if perhaps the Cruz twins will be delivered in Minoso’s final episode. Their births would serve as a perfect catalyst for Cruz to commit to exiting the firehouse and would also be an amazing sendoff storyline for the beloved character.
Another possible exit storyline for Cruz could be him and Chloe deciding to leave Chicago to move to Honduras to help Javi connect with his roots. We know that Cruz had planned a trip with Javi to Honduras late in season 14 and it would make sense for the family to choose to relocate to Honduras to help Javi connect further with his roots, which is something that is very important to Cruz and Chloe. This would keep the door open for Cruz to return and would also be a storyline that would feel organic, given the groundwork had been laid in season 14.
Regardless of how Cruz leaves the show, the one thing that seems almost certain is that it does not appear there are plans to kill the character off the show – and that’s a silver lining we’re going to be holding tightly onto!
