Where we left off

Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) was finally able to settle the score with his ex-partner Denny Woods (recurring guest star Mykelti Williamson), getting Woods arrested.

However, that didn’t keep Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) from being murdered. Olinsky was stabbed while he was in jail, targeted by an unrelated bad guy whom Olinsky had helped bring down years earlier.

He died from his injuries, and an enraged Voight shot the man who ordered the hit. He claimed it was self-defense, but Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) arrived just in time to hear otherwise from two witnesses.

The two were brought in front of a review board, but Chicago PD didn’t reveal what Antonio told them. Did he back up Voight’s story, or did he tell the truth?

Who’s out

  • Elias Koteas, after his character Alvin Olinsky was killed off in last season’s finale. Here’s why he was written out of the show.
  • Mykelti Williamson, since his character Denny Woods was arrested in the season finale.

Who’s in

  • Anne Heche (most recently seen as Patricia Campbell in NBC’s military drama The Brave) has been cast as Deputy Superintendent Katherine Brennan, another high-ranking official whom Voight comes into conflict with.
  • Showrunner and executive producer Rick Eid, who joined the show last season, signed a new contract with studio Universal Television that will keep him working on the series until at least 2020 (provided the show is renewed past this season).
  • Syndicated reruns of Chicago PD were sold to several different entities over the summer, so you’ll see a lot more of the show on TV. Some local affiliates will start airing reruns as early as next week! Check your local listings for potential new airings in your area.

What we know so far

  • The sixth season picks up not long after the fifth season finale. A recent first look shows what appears to be footage from a memorial for Alvin Olinsky.
  • That same first look reveals that the second episode of Chicago PD will be the third part of a crossover with Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.
  • There’s a new romance planned during Chicago PD season 6. Maybe this is the season where Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) finally gets some love?
