Character comings and goings: Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) quit the hospital in the season premiere after his ex-girlfriend Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) attempted suicide in front of him and ultimately died on the OR table.
Introduced as Donnell’s replacement was Dominic Rains as Dr. Crockett Marcel; Rains was announced as a recurring cast member but his name was in the main credits by the second episode.
Natalie’s recovery: Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) survived the car accident at the end of the prior season, but suffered a traumatic brain injury and lost her memory about that night. While she was in the ED, boyfriend Phillip Davis (recurring guest star Ian Harding) slipped a ring on her finger and told everyone she had agreed to marry him.
The only person who knew otherwise was Marcel, who chose not to speak up until much later in the season, when he told Natalie’s ex-fiancee Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss). Will told Natalie, who had already dumped Phillip. But when she tried to get back together with Will, he rejected her saying that he was “free” without her, leaving Natalie in tears.
Chexton’s love triangle: April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) was not pregnant, but she and Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) decided to start trying for a baby anyway. Choi’s excitedness about fatherhood started to wear on April, who ducked a kiss from Marcel but didn’t seem like she was putting up much of an effort. When April learned she was experiencing early onset menopause, and after another tiff with Choi, she kissed Marcel. Which will be fun to explain when Choi comes back from his military deployment.
Cancer stories: Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) was crushed to find out that wife Caroline’s (Paula Newsome) cancer had returned and she was going to die. Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) continued to fight her cancer, while having an impulsive hookup with fellow patient Ben (guest star Charles Malik Whitfield). Then he almost died too, only to make a miraculous recovery in the midseason finale.
