Former Chicago PD star Jon Seda has snagged a series regular role in another NBC project; he’ll star in the disaster-story pilot La Brea.

While Jon Seda was pink-slipped from Chicago PD, he might soon be back in business with NBC.

It was announced Thursday that Seda has been cast in a starring role in La Brea, one of the pilots NBC is developing for next season. One part disaster drama, one part family drama, the series is about what happens after a massive sinkhole opens in Los Angeles.

The show centers on one family (led by Law & Order: Los Angeles alum Natalie Zea and Terriers actor Michael Raymond-James) who are separated when the sinkhole opens. Half of the family finds out that they’re not in LA anymore—they’ve ended up in a “primeval world” and must find a way home.

Seda will play Dr. Benjamin Glass, a former Navy SEAL with an unspecified doctorate. His only character description is that he “knows how to take charge,” per Deadline.

His casting comes during the very first pilot season since the actor was let go from his role as Antonio Dawson on Chicago PD, in one of the One Chicago franchise’s most surprising and still somewhat controversial decisions.

It also comes about a week after Chicago PD executive producer Rick Eid told fans that they would not be getting any more updates on Seda’s character. Though the actor hasn’t been seen since the end of season 6, the show mentioned that Antonio had left Chicago and moved to Puerto Rico.

But Jon Seda’s casting in La Brea continues his long-standing relationship with NBC. Before he was cast in the One Chicago franchise, he was a series regular for mutliple seasons on the network’s Homicide: Life on the Street, and appeared on Law & Order as part of a Homicide crossover.

While this is definitely a different type of show for the actor, based on the vague description, it’s not really a different type of role. He’s going from playing a cop to playing a Navy SEAL, and we’ve seen that he can definitely command authority, too. The character should be a natural fit for him, and if NBC orders La Brea to series, One Chicago viewers will certainly flock to the new show.

It’s definitely good to see Seda land somewhere else so quickly after his Chicago PD exit. He joins Brian Geraghty as PD alums who have booked pilots this season.
