Should Chicago PD fans watch Sophia Bush in Love Victor?

When Love Victor premieres on Hulu next Thursday, June 18, it will bring former Chicago PD star Sophia Bush back to the small screen. But if you’re a One Chicago fan, is it worth getting a Hulu subscription?

The series is a spinoff of the critically acclaimed film Love, Simon, focusing on a new character and his circle of friends. It’s what audiences expect from a teen drama—there’s a lot of problems, a lot of camaraderie, and a lot of characters trying to find themselves.

What’s great about the series is that you don’t have to have seen the movie to understand the TV show. The themes are so universal that you can follow along easily, and there’s not a huge amount of connection between the two; what there is, is explained very clearly.

If you’re looking for something relatively light-hearted to binge-watch, this will fit that order well. The cast, led by Michael Cimino, is charming and they fulfill their parts with the exact right mix of teen idealism and teen angst. Chances are, you’ll find at least one character that you like or can identify with.

But if your sole reason for watching is Sophia Bush, there’s enough to tune in for as well.

Bush appears in four of Love Victor‘s ten episodes: “The Truth Hurts” (episode 4), “What Happens in Willacoochee” (episode 7), “Who The Hell Is B?” (episode 9) and “Spring Fling” (episode 10).

Her character Veronica is introduced when Victor’s friend Mia (played by Rachel Naomi Hilson, This Is Us) finds out that her father Harold is dating someone new. When he brings Veronica home, Mia is not happy and gives the new woman in her dad’s life quite the interrogation.

The remainder of the story arc is about Mia’s adjustment, or lack thereof, to Harold and Veronica’s relationship. Sophia Bush doesn’t get a huge amount of screen time, because this storyline comes second to Victor’s character arc, but she does have significant scenes in each episode in which she appears.

What’s the most fun for One Chicago fans, though, is that her love interest is played by Mekhi Phifer. Viewers will know him from his guest appearance in the Chicago PD episode “Captive” (as the man kidnapped along with Kevin Atwater). He also co-starred in the FOX series Lie to Me opposite Chicago Fire alum Monica Raymund.

With that in mind, Love Victor is worth a binge-watch if you have an existing Hulu subscription. If you don’t, it’s not worth paying the monthly subscription fee for, but Hulu usually runs a free trial for new sign-ups. Given the limited number of episodes that Sophia Bush is in, you can watch all of her appearances within the free trial window (which is usually 7 days).
